Woody Mann has
been teaching guitar workshops throughout the world for over two
decades. Known through his touring, recordings, books, and
instructional DVD's, he has
now established an annual weekend workshop in the UK. This year he will
be assisted by guitarists Trevor Laurence and Stewart Jordan. Woody's
workshops are hands-on
practical approaches to playing the many styles of fingerstyle, blues, ragtime, and gospel guitar.
In addition to learning new repertoire and techniques, the focus is to
offer students fresh ideas and new approaches to keep them on track long
after the workshop is over.

Workshop
details, location and accommodations
The site for
the workshop is the historic
Victoria Hall,
Saltaire, Shipley, near the city of Leeds and easily accessible by
plane (Leeds & Bradford airports), car or train. The workshop runs from
10:00 am- 6pm Saturday and Sunday with classes, demonstrations and group
playing scheduled throughout the day. Saturday evening will be an
informal student concert.
The
goal is to create a relaxed non-competitive workshop
environment where everyone from beginning students to advanced players
will be able to focus in on ways to further their music, understand their craft and learn
the often confusing art of how to play music with others.
The workshop will cover various styles of acoustic blues, ragtime and
gospel guitar playing.
Some of the ideas covered
will be syncopated picking techniques, how to 'play off' the
chords and understand the logic of the fretboard, creating variations
within a tune, open tunings and techniques on developing your own sound.
The repertoire and techniques of the early masters including Rev,Gary
Davis, Charlie Patton, Blind Blake, Lonnie Johnson, Robert Johnson, Big
Bill Broonzy Blind
Lemon Jefferson will be covered. In addition to the scheduled classes, there
will be daily opportunities to study in casual gatherings, take private
lessons, sit in on jam sessions, or to simply practice on
your own. Total workshop enrollment is limited and class size will be
small to give attention to the needs of individual students.
The program is designed for students of all levels from
beginning to advanced. Beginner/intermediate players will be
taught the fundamentals of fingerpicking and blues while more advanced
players will be able to move ahead into more complex styles and tunes.
The daily schedule is designed so that each student will receive
individual attention and also learn in a group setting. Classes will
offer practical ideas and new approaches to keep you on track long after
the workshop is over. Upon arrival Saturday morning, the staff will
present class detailed class descriptions and present the daily
schedule. Throughout the day there will be time for one on one
instruction, workshops in how to jam and time for individual
practicing. In addition to the schedule morning and early
afternoon classes, there will be late afternoon workshops covering a
wide variety of topics.
There are many B&Bs and hotels in the area. Here is a helpful website
